My Family's Favorite Streusel-filled Coffee Cake

This is a great Sunday morning breakfast treat!

1½ cups flour
¾ cup sugar
2½ teaspoons baking powder
¾ teaspoon salt
¼ cup shortening
¾ cup milk
1 egg

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease round a layer pan, 9 x 1½", or a square pan, 8 x 8 x 2" or 9 x 9 x 2". Blend all ingredients; beat vigorously ½ minute. Set aside.

Streusel topping:

Mix ¾ cup brown sugar, 3 teaspoons cinnamon, ½ cup finely chopped nuts (could be omitted), and 3 tablespoons butter, room temperature.

Spread ½ the batter in pan. Sprinkle half the streusel mixture over the batter. Top with the remaining batter, then the remaining streusel mixture. Bake 25-30 minutes or until a wooden tooth pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve warm. 9-12 servings.
