Do you like
high contrast with a spark of color? If you do, this quilt is for
you! It features solid black, solid white, and black and white
prints with an accent of red. This is a bold, but colorful
high-contrast design! Of course, the recipe is included in your
pattern.
Choose small
scale black & white and white & black prints. Avoid large scale
prints. When cutting large scale prints into smaller pieces the
print may be lost and end up appearing as solid white or black
material.
FINISHED QUILT
SIZE: 78½” x 78½”
YARDAGE:
16 different strips, 4” x 42”, black & white prints that are more
white than black.
16 different strips, 4” x 42”, black & white prints that are more
black than white.
2 yards solid black (black sateen preferred).
2 yards solid white (I used a slightly off-white shade called
“snow”) for blocks and
posts.
1½ yards solid red for blocks and sashing.
3 yards for borders if you choose a directional print. I chose a
directional black and
white print. If your border is not directional, you need 2 1/3
yards.
Backing fabric: 5 yards
ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES:
Sewing machine in good working order
Sewing supplies you regularly use such as thread, straight pins,
scissors, seam ripper, etc.
Rotary cutting equipment: mat (18” x 24”), ruler (6” x 24”) and
cutter with sharp blade. Optional: 6” x 12” ruler is helpful.
Bias Square Ruler or 6” x 6” Square Ruler. This is important.
CUTTING
You will be making 9 Star Blocks. Note
that 5 stars are black and 4 stars are white.
You will have enough black and white print fabric to make 7
additional blocks (a quilt of 16 blocks that would measure 98½” x
98½”) but you would need an additional 1½ yds. solid black fabric
(total 3½ yds.), 1½ yd. solid white fabric (total 3½ yds.), and 1
solid red fabric (total 2½ yds.).
From each black and white print fabric, cut:
4 squares, 4” x 4”, then recut the remainder of the strip into 2
strips 2” x 24”. Keep matching squares and matching strips together.
From the solid white fabric cut:
4 strips, 4” x 42”. From these strips, cut 32 squares, 4” x 4”.
These will be used with the black and white prints to make the Half
Square Triangle Blocks.
4 strips, 3½” x 42”. From these strips, cut 40 squares, 3½” x 3½”.
8 strips, 2” x 42”. These will be used in the Four Patch Blocks.
1 additional strip, 2” x 42”. Keep this separate.
16 squares, 2½” x 2½”, for Posts
From the solid black fabric cut:
4 strips, 4” x 42”. From these strips, cut 40 squares, 4” x 4”.
These will be used with the black and white prints to make the Half
Square Triangle Blocks.
4 strips, 3½” x 42”. From these strips, cut 32 squares, 3½” x 3½”.
10 strips, 2” x 42”. These will be used in the Four Patch Blocks.
1 additional strip, 2” x 42”. Keep this separate.
From the solid red fabric cut:
2 strips, 2” x 42”.
24 rectangles, 2½” x 18½” for Sashing
For the borders:
Cut 3 strips across the fabric (perpendicular to the selvage), 8½” x
42”. Cut one strip in half to create 2 rectangles, 8½” x 21”. Sew
one 21” piece to one 42” piece to create a 63” piece. Cut this piece
62½” long. These will be the top and bottom borders.
Cut 2 strips the length of the fabric (parallel to the selvage), 8½”
x 78½”. These will be the side borders.
If your fabric is not directional, all borders can be cut parallel
to the selvage so they don't need to be pieced.
