YARDAGE:
¼
yard each of 8 different blue prints, plaids, and stripes
¼ yard each of 8 different blue-violet (periwinkle) prints, plaids,
and stripes
¼ yard each of 8 different violet (purple) prints, plaids, and
stripes
¼ yard each of 8 different red-violet prints, plaids, and stripes
¼ yard each of 32 different light cream, off-white, light tan or
muslin prints, plaids, and stripes. Keep it light, not medium in
value. The picture on my website shows the lights more medium than
they are in the real quilt. They are very light in the real quilt.
SUPPLIES:
Sewing machine in good working order
Sewing supplies you regularly use such as thread, straight pins,
scissors, seam ripper, etc.
Rotary cutting equipment: mat (18" x 24"), ruler (6" x 24") and
cutter with sharp blade.
Bias square ruler, 6" x 6", or another 6" square ruler. This is
important.
CUTTING:
From each
¼ yard, cut 4 squares, 6" x 6". The rest of the strip, or at least
part of it, will (probably) be used in the border.
Combine the colored squares (blue, periwinkle, purple, or
red-violet) with the light squares. Make 8 Half Square Triangles of
each fabric (for example, 8 Half Square Triangles using one of the
blue fabrics and a mixture of the light fabrics, 8 Half Square
Triangles using another of the blue fabrics and a mixture of the
light fabrics, etc.). In each color (blue, periwinkle, purple,
red-violet) you will make 64 Half Square Triangles. Repeat with all
4 colors, to make a total of 256 Half Square Triangles. Trim all
Half Square Triangles to 5½" x 5½".
Stop there. How to cut the Half Square Triangles to get the "Berry
Blocks" will be demonstrated in class.
