YARDAGE: ½ yard each of:
5 different light cream, off-white, tan, muslin, and beige fabrics
5 different medium light gold fabrics
5 different medium red fabrics
5 different medium dark blue fabrics
5 different dark black fabrics
BACKING FABRIC: 4 yards
BINDING:
½ yard of medium-dark blue fabric or your choice
BATTING:

SUPPLIES:
Sewing machine in good working order.
Sewing supplies you regularly use such as thread, straight pins,
scissors, seam ripper, etc.
Rotary cutting equipment: mat (18" x 24"), ruler (6" x 24"), and
cutter with a sharp blade.
6” Bias Square Ruler or another 6” square ruler. This is important.
8" or
larger square ruler to trim large Half Square Triangle in the basket
blocks
CUTTING:
Martha Washington Star block, cut:
2 same black squares, 2" x 2"
2 same light squares, 2" x 2"
2 same red squares, 2½" x 2½"
2 same black squares, 3" x 3"
4 same black rectangles, 2½" x 4½", and 4 same black squares, 2½" x
2½"
8 same light squares, 2½" x 2½"
Blue and gold border, cut:
16 blue rectangles, 2½" x 4½"
28 gold squares, 2½" x 2½"
4 black rectangles, 2½" x 4½"
Red border, cut:
4 red rectangles, 2½" x 16½"
4 light squares, 2½" x 2½"
Zigzag border, cut:
44 black rectangles, 2½" x 4½"
88 gold squares, 2½" x 2½"
4 light squares, 2½" x 2½"
4 red squares, 2½" x 2½"
Blue border, cut:
4 blue strips, 2½" x 28½"
Looks like but aren't Four Patches border, cut:
7 gold strips, 2½" x 42"
7 black strips, 2½" x 42"
Sew 7 strips together in order -- gold, black, gold, black, gold,
black, gold.
Then sew 7 more strips together in order -- black, gold, black,
gold, black, gold, black.
Note: one set starts with and ends with gold. The other set starts
with and ends with black.
Press as desired, then cut these sets of strips into 2½" wide
sections as follows:
16 sections from 1 set of strips
16 sections from the other set of strips
Cake Stand basket blocks:
For EACH basket cut:
1 light square, 7" x 7"
1 red square, 7" x 7"
8 light squares, 2½" x 2½"
10 red squares, 2½" x 2½"
2 red rectangles, 2½" x 6½"
Note that lights are the same fabric and reds are the same fabric
in each basket.
Cut 3 additional lights and 3 additional reds to make 3 more
baskets. You will make a total of 4 baskets.
For the outside border, cut:
48 blue squares, 4½" x 4½"
4 light squares, 4½" x 4½"
96 light squares, 2½" x 2½"
