Supply List

 

FINISHED QUILT SIZE: 45½" x 45½"

 

FABRIC SELECTION:

            1/3 yard of 3 different medium or dark blues

            1/3 yard of 4 different golds

            1/3 yard of 3 different reds

            1/3 yard of 4 different red/black prints or plaids

            ¼ yard of 1 solid black

            1 yard of 1 red/black prints or plaids (side and corner triangles)

BACKING: 3 yards

BATTING: 52" x 52”

BINDING: ½ yard solid black or your choice

SUPPLIES:

Sewing machine in good working order.

Sewing supplies you regularly use such as thread, straight pins, scissors, seam ripper, etc.

Rotary cutting equipment: mat (18" x 24"), ruler (6" x 24", and a cutter with a sharp blade.

12½" square ruler to cut the side and corner triangles. If you omit the corner triangles like I did, an 8" square ruler is large enough.

6" x 12" ruler is useful, but optional.

CUTTING

Choose which basket you want to make. The following are instructions for the basket with the braided handle. Instructions for the pieced basket and the appliqued basket are at the end of the pattern.

 Or you can include any pieced or appliqued block you want to make for the center medallion of your quilt. The block needs to finish 8" x 8" or 9" x 9". If you make an 8" block, you will need to add a black frame so it measure 9" x 9" finished (9½" x 9½" unfinished). If you make a 9" finished block (9½" x 9½" unfinished), you will not be adding a frame (and you won't need to purchase and cut solid black fabric).

Basket:

Braided handle: 3 strips, cut on the bias, 1½" x 24"

Bottom of basket:

1 square, 3" x 3" (becomes 2 Half Square Triangles)

1 square, 5" x 5" (becomes 2 Half Square Triangles, you will use 1)

Background:

3 rectangles, 2½" x 4½"

 1 rectangle, 2½" x 6½"

1 square, 2½" x 2½"

1 square, 3" x 3" (becomes 2 Half Square Triangles)

1 square 5" x 5" (becomes 2 Half Square Triangles, you will use 1)

Solid black frame for Basket block: 1 strip, 1¼" x 42". Cut this into 2 strips, 1¼" x 8½", and 2 strips 1¼" x 9½". Note that this strip is purposefully cut wider than it needs to be. It will be trimmed later.

1st Round- Four Patches: 1 strip red/black fabric, 2" x 42", 1 strip red fabric, cut 2" x 42".

2nd Round- Squares: 1 or 2 strips red, 3½" x 42". From this/these strip(s), cut 12 squares, 3½" x 3½".

3rd Round- Four Patches: 2 strips red/black fabric, 2" x 42", 2 strips gold fabric, 2" x 42".

4th Round- Squares: 2 strips red/black fabric, 3½" x 42". From these strip, cut 20 squares, 3½" x 3½".

5th Round- Four Patches: 3 strips gold fabric, 2" x 42", 3 strips black fabric, 2" x 42".

6th Round- Squares: 3 strips gold, 3½" x 42". From these strips, cut 28 squares, 3½" x 3½".

7th Round- Four Patches: 4 strips red fabric, 2" x 42", 4 strips blue fabric, 2" x 42".

8th Round- Squares: 3 strips blue, 3½" x 42". from these strips, cut 36 squares, 3½" x 3½".

Side Triangles: Cut 2 strips 8" x 42". From these strips, cut 9 squares, 8" x 8". Cut on both diagonals to yield 36 triangles.

Corner Triangles (optional): Cut 2 squares, 9" x 9". Cut on one diagonal to yield 4 corner triangles.
