STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE with CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES QUILT

Supply List

This quilt features the colors red, yellow, black and white. Cheerful and bold but warm and rich, too, and with a surprising contrast of black and white. I played with colors that don’t usually “go together.”

FINISHED QUILT SIZE: 76½” x 76½”

YARDAGE:
9 different red fabrics, Ό yard each
9 different yellow fabrics, 1/3 yard each
1 black fabric (sateen recommended), 2/3 yard
1 white fabric (sateen recommended), 2/3 yard

For the border:
1 red print fabric, 2½ yards

Backing fabric: 5 yards

Batting: 80½” x 80½”

SUPPLIES:
Sewing machine in good working order.
Sewing supplies you regularly use such as thread, straight pins, scissors, seam ripper, etc.
Rotary cutting Equipment: mat (18" x 24"), ruler (6" x 24") and cutter with sharp blade.
New item: Bias Square Ruler, 8" x 8" or another 8" or larger square ruler. This is important! (Previous quilts in this series have required a 6" x 6" square ruler. In this quilt, you will be trimming some Half Square Triangles to 6½" x 6½”, so a 6" square ruler won't be large enough. You can bring your 6" square ruler, however, if you have one, because it will be easier to handle for trimming the smaller Half Square Triangles.

CUTTING

For your red and yellow fabrics:

From each red and yellow fabric, cut 1 strip 7" x 42".

From 8 of the yellow fabrics only, cut 1 strip, 2½" x 42". (You will have 9 yellow fabrics; one of them you will not need to cut a 2½" strip from.)

From each 7" red and yellow strip, cut 2 squares, 7" x 7", for a total of 18 red squares and 18 yellow squares. Mark the diagonal on the back of each yellow square only with a pen or pencil.

From the remainder of each strip (approximately 28" long now), cut each strip in half lengthwise so you will have 2 strips 3" x 28".

You will now have a total of 18 red strips and 18 yellow strips, each 3" x 28".

Cut 16 squares, 3" x 3", from each fabric. You will use all of the first 28" strip and most of the second 28" strip. You will cut a total of 144 red squares, 3" x 3" and 144 yellow squares, 3" x 3".

Mark the diagonal on the back of each yellow square only with a pen or pencil.

From each of the eight 2½" x 42" yellow strips, cut 3 rectangles, 2½" x 6½" for a total of 24 yellow rectangles.

For your black and white fabrics:

Cut 8 black and 8 white strips, 2½" x 42".

From one black strip only, cut 4 squares, 2½" x 2½".

Border:

Cut the borders lengthwise, parallel to the selvage.
Cut 2 strips, 8½" x 60½".
Cut 2 strips, 8½" x 76½”
