YARDAGE: ½ yard each of:
10 different rich, bright red fabrics (medium in value, not light or
dark)
10 different rich, bright fuchsia fabrics (medium in value, not
light or dark)
10 different medium-dark or dark black fabrics
Again, because this is important, make sure the red fabrics are rich
and bright, not light or dark. Make sure the fuchsia fabrics are
rich and bright, not light or dark. The black fabrics should read
dark or medium dark, not lighter than that. The blacks should be the
darkest fabrics in this quilt.
Note: I used 12 different red fabrics, 12 different fuchsia fabrics,
and 12 different black fabrics. Mathematically, you will have enough
fabric to complete the quilt top with 10 of each. I used 12 because
although I had more fabric leftovers, this gave me the flexibility
to use my "best" blocks and leave out the ones that didn't have
enough contrast. It also gave the quilt a greater variety of fabrics
(36 as opposed to 30).
BACKING FABRIC: 5 yards
BATTING: 86" x 86"
SUPPLIES:
Sewing machine in good working order.
Sewing supplies you regularly use such as thread, straight pins,
scissors, seam ripper, etc.
Rotary cutting equipment: mat (18" x 24"), ruler (6" x 24"), and
cutter with a sharp blade.
6” Bias Square Ruler or another 6” square ruler. This is important.
The 6" x 24" ruler (under Rotary cutting equipment) is necessary in
this quilt not only for cutting the strips but also for marking
diagonals on the 10 ½" squares and large Half Square Triangles. This
is important.
12 ½" square ruler. This is necessary to cut 10 ½" squares and to
trim large Quarter Square Triangles. This is important.
6" x 12" ruler is useful, but optional
CUTTING:
From each ½ yard cut:
1 strip 4½" x 42", then cut from this strip 4 squares 4½" x 4½" and
5 squares, 3½" x 3½".
2 squares, 10½" x 10½" To cut the 10½" squares, I used a 12½" square
ruler.
Cut 1 additional fuchsia square, 10½" x 10½".
